VAAL TRIANGLE - The Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons says overcrowding in the country’s prisons remains a major concern and a perennial problem. According to the Department of Correctional Services, the overcrowding levels escalated from 32% in March last year to 46% at the end of March this year. In August, president Cyril Ramaphosa announced a remission for non-violent offenders to alleviate chronic overcrowding and improve prison conditions. Inspecting judge of prisons Edwin Cameron says overcrowding in the country’s prisons is a condition resulting from political executive choices.
