VAAL TRIANGLE - Egg prices are surging as South Africa grapples with the ongoing avian flu outbreak. The price of 60 eggs has tripled the rate of inflation in just one month, reaching R162 skyrocketing amid a significant chicken and egg shortage. Five-million birds have been culled this year, affecting 20% of the commercial layer flock and 30% of the national broiler breeder population. Association of Meat Importers and Exporters of Southern Africa CEO, Paul Matthew warns shortages will persist for 12 to 18 months, despite import measures.
