Sebokeng Driver’s Licence Testing Centre needs more cash

SEBOKENG - The Gauteng Department of Transport has admitted the troubled Sebokeng Driver’s Licence Testing Centre will need an extra R138-million to complete. The project, which began in 2015, has already cost more than R80-million but remains unfinished. Despite a further R9.4-million spent on security since 2019, the centre was vandalised and left in ruins. The Development Bank of Southern Africa has now been appointed as the implementing agent, with construction officially handed over in June. The provincial government has budgeted R54.5-million for the current financial year and R84 million for 2026/27. Officials say the centre should finally be completed by February 2027. Community leaders and opposition parties have condemned the ballooning costs, calling the project a wasteful white elephant.
