SHARPEVILLE - Two police officers from the Sharpeville SAPS have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and extorting a foreign national. Constable Gift Mncedi Nteso and Reservist Constable Seipati Mofokeng appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice. According to reports, on 29 July 2025, a senior officer alerted the Serious Corruption Investigation unit in Vaal Rand that a Chinese national had been unlawfully detained. The victim was allegedly forced to pay R3,000 for his release. Preliminary investigations found that the victim was released after the officers had been paid, without any official arrest ever being recorded. The SCI team questioned the two officers at the Sharpeville Police Station, and arrested them after they couldn’t give a valid reason for what they did. The case has been postponed while the investigation continues.
