South Africa is closely monitoring a new COVID-19 variant

VAAL TRIANGLE - The Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, says the country is closely monitoring the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant known as Nimbus. Motsoaledi delivered the keynote address at the opening of the fourth G20 Health Working Group meeting in Johannesburg yesterday. According to the minister, the new variant has been linked to a rise in cases in parts of Asia. He says while South Africa’s data shows very low COVID-19 activity, there is a seasonal increase in influenza. Motsoaledi says it is important for citizens to continue maintaining good hygiene practices to help reduce the spread of all respiratory illnesses.
