VAAL TRIANGLE - The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters urges expedited action to address looming poultry shortages and rising prices caused by avian influenza outbreaks. They recommend a significant reduction in import duties for various chicken products, with a focus on aiding low-income households. The poultry industry has already culled over five-million birds, leading to supply shortages and price hikes of up to 25%. The proposed rebate seeks to stabilise supply, prevent price spikes and maintain food security amid the potential threat of interest rate hikes and rising inflation.
