The poultry industry is currently being hit hard by the outbreak of bird flu.

VAAL TRIANGLE - The Department of Agriculture has started importing fertilized eggs for the broiler industry. The poultry industry is currently being hit hard by the outbreak of bird flu. The H5 and H7 bird flu viruses have already led to the culling of millions of chickens to limit the outbreak. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Reggie Ngcobo says Gauteng is hit hardest by the H7 virus, while the H5 is most common in the Western Cape. Ngcobo says the number of farms where the virus occurs is increasing and the industry has asked for the strictest possible safety measures to be applied. He says the Department has facilitated the importation of fertilized eggs for the broiler chicken industry, and similar steps can be taken for the table egg industry if it is possible.
