MEYERTON - Two suspects were fatally wounded in a shootout with police on the R59 road near Kliprivier on 31 October 2024. The confrontation occurred after police acted on intelligence indicating that suspects were enroute to commit a cross-pavement robbery in Sedibeng. As police intercepted the suspects, they began firing, prompting officers to return fire. Two suspects were killed, while a third escaped on foot. One officer sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects' vehicle had been reported stolen in Alexandra earlier in October. Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng’s Provincial Commissioner, praised the operation, attributing its success to the Minister’s multi-disciplinary crime-fighting strategy. He commended the collaborative efforts of the Gauteng Tactical Response Team and other units involved in intercepting the suspects and preventing the planned robbery.
