Vaal residents still have to pay electricity tariff increase pending Nersa court ruling appeal

VAAL TRIANGLE - Vaal Triangle and other South African residents will at this stage still have to pay an electricity price increase kicking in from July, pending an appeal by Nersa to a court order. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa will appeal a High Court order regarding the processing of licensed electricity distributors' tariff applications for the 2024/25 financial year. AfriForum submitted an urgent application to the court earlier this month to prevent NERSA from proceeding with these considerations, as a High Court order of October 2022 requires that a cost study be submitted as part of municipalities’ applications for tariff increases. However, only 66 of the municipalities submitted cost studies as required. Nersa pokesperson Charles Hlebela says NERSA's decisions remain in effect, pending the appeal outcome, allowing distributors to implement the approved tariffs from this past Monday, 1 July 2024.
