VANDERBIJLPARK - The Vaal River has officially reopened for boating season after 398 hectares of invasive plants, including water lettuce and hyacinth, were removed. The overgrowth had reduced water visibility to less than one hectare, crippling tourism and boating activities. Local government, community groups, and Rand Water collaborated on the R10-million effort. The reopening seeks to bring relief to the Vaal’s hospitality industry and the Spring sailing season.
