Vereeniging businessman arrested after fatal shooting in robbery attempt

VEREENIGING - A businessman from Vereeniging has found himself behind bars after fatally shooting one of three armed suspects who attempted to rob him, over the weekend. The incident occurred at a filling station on the corner of Voortrekker and Victoria Streets while the owner was replenishing cash in an on-site ATM. The trio of suspects ambushed him, trying to seize the money. In the ensuing confrontation, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in one suspect being shot dead. The deceased was later identified as a Zimbabwean national. The remaining two suspects fled the scene, hijacking an elderly woman’s vehicle to escape. Authorities have launched a manhunt to track them down. Despite claims of self-defense, the businessman was arrested following the shooting. According to reports, foreign nationals have been linked to a surge in hijackings and robberies in Vereeniging. Police are urging anyone with information to assist in locating the fugitives.
