VEREENIGING - A police sergeant belonging to the Vehicle Investigations Unit in Vereeniging, the 44-year-old Luyanda Louis Mkaza, was granted R5000 bail by the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court. He is facing three counts of corruption. Crime Watch’s Yusuf Abramjee says it is alleged that on 22 July 2023, the complainant’s husband was arrested for the robbery of a motor vehicle at Meyerton Police Station. The investigating officer, who introduced himself as Louis Mkaza demanded a payment of R10,000, to make the case not stand in court. The complainant managed to only raise R4,000 to pay Mkaza. The complainant paid the balance of R6,000 to Mkaza when her husband appeared in court on 24 July 2023. When her husband was not being released and the matter kept on being postponed, the complainant reported Mkaza to the Gauteng Anti-Corruption Unit. Mkaza was arrested on 27 September 2023 at his workplace. The matter was postponed to 31 October 2023, for further investigations.
