VAAL TRIANGLE - President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed into law the Divorce Amendment Bil, recognising Muslim marriages to safeguard women and children during marital dissolution. Prompted by a Constitutional Court ruling, this amendment addresses previous shortcomings in the law, providing for the definition of a Muslim marriage, protection of dependent and minor children, asset redistribution, and forfeiture of patrimonial benefits. The move aims to ensure that Muslim couples marrying under Islamic law receive statutory protection without the need for an additional civil marriage registration, as previously required.
