EMFULENI - The MMC for Waste in the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Councillor Jona Radebe encouraged residents of ELM to start to recycle waste. Radebe said due to several factors, waste generation has largely increased around Emfuleni recently, with no signs of it slowing down. With such immense volumes of waste arising and land shortages, the municipality is battling with providing adequate waste treatment services. Radebe, joined by ELM section 80 Committee members, affected ward councillors, community leaders and local businesses, concerned with keeping Emfuleni clean, recently conducted an oversight visit to assess challenges posed by the closure of the Boitshepi Landfill site and Sonland Park Waste Transfer station. The visit focused on mushrooming illegal dumping sites in the Vanderbilpark, Boipatong, Sonlandpark, Sebokeng and Evaton areas, and the full impact illegal recycling operations have on the environment and residents living next to these dumping hotspots. Radebe warned residents and businesses to stop illegal dumping as heavy fines are going to be issued going forward.
Radebe said the ELM multiparty coalition government do everything in its power to address waste collection challenges and illegal dumping, to keep the environment clean.
