EMFULENI - The DA in Gauteng says he opened an inquiry docket with the South African Police Services’ Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, to investigate the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Mzi Khumalo, over the Emfuleni Local Municipality generators corruption scandal. The DA’s Kingsol Chabalala says the DA approached the Hawks to investigate what happened to over R15-million spent on generators, where the generators are, and who benefited from this money. According to Chabalala, MEC Khumalo contradicted his answers when answering questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Chabalala says MEC Khumalo initially said the money was used to buy generators for the municipality instead of leasing them. However, in his response to follow-up questions by the DA, he indicated that no new generators had been bought within the last five financial years in Emfuleni. Chabalala warned that should it be found that the money was stolen, those implicated will be held accountable and pay back all the money that was meant to benefit the residents of Emfuleni. He added that MEC Khumalo has a case to answer, as he is responsible for ensuring that municipalities administer their finances properly.
